Lotho Rogare
Fire & BloodLotho Rogare was a member of House Rogare of Lys whose banking helped extend the family’s influence into King’s Landing. His role joined commercial expansion to court politics: the branch he established on Visenya’s Hill became part of a wider rise in which wealth, patronage, and suspicion gathered around the Lyseni newcomers.
Arrival and establishment in King’s Landing
Lotho came to King’s Landing with his sister, Larra Rogare, and their brothers Moredo Rogare and Roggerio Rogare. Each established a different kind of presence in the capital: Moredo commanded Larra’s guards, Roggerio opened the Mermaid, and Lotho set about founding a branch of the Rogare Bank atop Visenya’s Hill. The family’s varied enterprises gave it access to the city’s court, security, and commercial life.
Lotho’s bank was more than a symbol of the family’s arrival. During the Rogare ascendancy, the bank paid rich returns on deposited money, attracting increasing numbers of lords who entrusted it with their gold. That confidence in turn enlarged the Rogares’ reach: a financial institution could draw influential clients into a relationship with the family without requiring Lotho himself to hold a court office.
Wealth, patronage, and political influence
By the end of 134 AC, stories in King’s Landing portrayed the Rogare brothers as instruments of a larger design. In this account, Lotho bought men with gold, while Roggerio won them through his establishment and Moredo compelled obedience through force. The tale made Lotho’s banking an explicitly political resource, not simply a source of private wealth.
The chronicles qualify that image. The Lyseni were ambitious, and Lotho’s use of the bank to win supporters was accepted as real, but the more elaborate stories of the brothers’ command over the court mixed truth with fear and falsehood. They were one faction among several competing for influence around the young king, not the sole power behind the throne. Their foreign origins and customs helped make their success seem more threatening than the ambitions of native courtiers pursuing wealth and authority by other means.
The Rogare ascendancy and its wider effects
The period later called the Lysene Spring brought prosperity to King’s Landing, in part through House Rogare’s activities. As confidence in the bank grew, trade expanded too. Ships from Lys and other cities crowded the Blackwater’s docks with goods from across the Narrow Sea and beyond, while port towns elsewhere in the Seven Kingdoms also shared in the increase in commerce. Lotho’s banking therefore belonged to a wider economic change, linking the family’s fortunes to the influx of deposits and the capital’s flourishing trade.
The Rogare family’s rise reached beyond Westeros. Lysandro Rogare became the leading power in Lys, while other family members gained influence through alliances and positions abroad. Lotho’s branch on Visenya’s Hill was the family’s foothold in the royal capital: it connected Lysene wealth to the lords who deposited their money and to the political networks that wealth could help cultivate. The evidence establishes his part in that ascent, but does not specify his later fate or the eventual course of his own career.
